Union Teachers Stand, Divided Schools Fall

By Lee Culpepper - Staff Writer

Recently, I heard from an accomplished educator, a math teacher at an excellent charter school in Scottsdale, Arizona; his name is Thomas. Thomas agrees with many problems I address concerning education, but we don’t agree completely on teachers’ unions.

I assert that teachers’ unions inflict more harm than good, and Thomas concedes that unions are a problem, but he proposes the following: “While I agree with most of your argument, your portrayal of the unions is not entirely correct. Remember, this country was founded on the fledgling concept of ‘united we stand, divided we fall.’ Since management holds most of the power, labor needs to unite. Teacher pay is abysmal yet is much higher due to the unions. So, I think you are over simplifying the union’s conscious contribution to the problems you discuss.”

What more proof can you ask for in the danger that teachers unions pose to our children. Granted, union contracts are different from state to state, but by-in-large they are essentially the same. Good teachers little to no recognition and they receive the same commensurate amount of pay that mediocre to bad teachers get. In essence, in true socialistic fashion, as unions in general are, everyone gets the same thing regardless of performance. Tenured teachers however good or bad receive much more than good teachers that aren't tenured. Tenure is another problem within the teachers union structure. It is the golden parachute for teachers. They are in essence nearly untouchable if they attain tenure.

There is no use for teachers unions anymore. In fact, I would propose that no union should exist if they operate within an strategic/economic sector. A union that can paralyze entire industries that reverberate throughout or economy and social strata shouldn't be able to wield that kind of collective power and teachers unions are within that pervue.

Don't let me words highlight the horridness that are teachers unions. How about you read John Stossels commentary on teachers unions in his state of new york. Makes for a good read and highlights the types of problems that teachers unions pose to our children.
